Meydan Racecourse is one of the most spectacular horse racing venues in the world — a 60,000-capacity grandstand stretching almost two kilometres alongside the racing track, with the Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai skyline as a backdrop. Located in the Nad Al Sheba district, Meydan is not only home to the world’s richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup, but also regularly hosts concerts, New Year’s Eve celebrations, and other major events.

Venue Facts

  • Capacity: Up to 60,000 for large events; standard racing days accommodate approximately 40,000
  • Location: Nad Al Sheba, Dubai (approximately 5km from Downtown Dubai)
  • Opened: 2010
  • Key event: Dubai World Cup — world’s richest horse race (AED 40 million prize fund), held annually in late March

Getting There

Driving: Meydan is most easily reached by car. The venue is accessible from Al Khail Road (E44) and Oud Metha Road. Ample free parking is available on racecourse grounds. For the Dubai World Cup and major events, designated car parks are well-signposted.

Taxi/Careem: Taxis to Meydan are readily available from anywhere in Dubai. Journey time from Downtown Dubai is 10-15 minutes outside of event traffic. On major race days, Careem and Uber surge — book a return in advance or allow extra time.

Shuttle Services: Dubai World Cup and major events often run shuttle services from key metro stations. Check the event website closer to your visit for shuttle information.

The Dubai World Cup

The Dubai World Cup takes place on the final Saturday of March (dates vary slightly by year). It is a full race day programme typically featuring six Group 1 races. The headline race, the Dubai World Cup itself, runs over 2,000 metres on the all-weather track. The event is alcohol-free, family-friendly, and free to enter for the grandstand — making it one of the most accessible world-class sporting events in Dubai. VIP packages and hospitality tables in the grandstand are ticketed and available at various price points.

Horse Racing Season

The Dubai racing season runs from November through March. Weekly race meetings (typically Thursdays and Fridays during the season) are free entry and a wonderful Dubai experience. The atmosphere builds toward the World Cup finale. Regular race days are a great low-cost way to experience Meydan before the big event.

Concerts and Other Events

Meydan’s enormous capacity and outdoor space make it a prime venue for large-scale concerts and festivals. Past events include major EDM festivals, New Year’s Eve countdown concerts, and international touring artists who need large outdoor spaces. The infield and track area can be configured for stage setups accommodating tens of thousands of standing attendees.

Venue Tips

Meydan operates as an alcohol-free venue in keeping with the Dubai World Cup and horse racing tradition. Food and beverage options are excellent throughout the grandstand — from fast food to fine dining restaurants at the Meydan Hotel which is integrated into the grandstand building. Smart casual dress is appropriate for most events; the Dubai World Cup has traditionally been a day for fashionable attire.

Ticket Buying Tips

Regular racing season entry is free for public areas. Dubai World Cup hospitality packages are available through the Dubai Racing Club website (dubairacingclub.com) and typically go on sale in January each year. Grandstand table packages for the Dubai World Cup are in high demand — book early. Secondary market tickets occasionally appear on platforms like Viagogo for VIP hospitality packages that are sold out through official channels.
